The SFP - a catalyst for practical change

In a nation where over half of the population—57.3%, to be precise—is below the age of 25, and nearly 40% are under the age of 15, the statistics tell a compelling story. Ghana’s future lies in the hands of its youth. Ghana’s population is projected to reach 52 million by 2050, with a staggering 47% of this population being under the age of 25. The youth, therefore, are not just a demographic; they are the nation’s future.

Recognizing this, we at the Environmental Leadership Forum have embarked on a transformative journey through our “Sustainable Futures Project.” After months of meticulous planning, extensive meetings, and constructive interactions with school authorities, the inaugural edition of SFP was officially launched at Gazelle Community School in Kotei on March 24, 2022.

Our commitment to this initiative was exemplified by the overwhelming response it received from the KNUST student community, with over 200 students eagerly answering the call to volunteer. After a rigorous selection process, 12 exceptional individuals were chosen to be part of our dedicated team. These volunteers underwent comprehensive training, led by postgraduate students in Environmental Science, to ensure they were well-equipped to impart essential knowledge.

The project, which kicked off at Gazelle Community School, spanned 7 weeks of engaging tuition sessions. A total of 28 students from Primary 4, 5, and 6 were actively involved, immersing themselves in critical topics such as Understanding the Environment, Environmental Challenges in Ghana, Climate Change: Basic Science, Impacts, and Mitigation, and Sustainable Development. Practical exercises on waste segregation and composting were integrated into the curriculum, fostering hands-on learning experiences that will stay with these young minds for a lifetime.

As part of our efforts to instil responsible environmental practices, we proudly donated waste segregation bins to Gazelle Community School. These bins served as practical tools for waste management and environmental stewardship. The results were evident as students enthusiastically embraced these bins, actively participating in waste segregation efforts. The bins not only facilitated efficient waste management but also served as a visual reminder of the importance of responsible waste disposal. Through this small yet impactful step, we empowered students to take ownership of their environment and contribute to a cleaner, greener future.

At the heart of our mission to create a more sustainable school environment was the symbolic act of tree planting. Gazelle Community School, devoid of any trees on its compound, welcomed the addition of a majestic royal palm tree. This gesture held profound significance, not just for the school but for the broader community.

As we reflect on these tangible contributions, we see the Sustainable Futures Project as more than just an educational endeavour—it’s a catalyst for practical change.

Together, we will continue to make a difference, one student, one school, and one community at a time.
